Yes, I admit it ... I snore ... quite loudly for a little person. I'm not proud of it, but there, I said it.
As I'm getting older, it seems my snoring is sadly getting worse. A lot probably has to do with my overbite, and of course, we snore more as we get older because our muscles become increasingly slack with age.
In an effort to combat my snoring and get a better nights sleep (and give my husband a better night sleep) I decided to look into a mandibular advancement device. I did some research and decided on the VitalSleep Anti-Snoring Mouthguard because of its ability to be adjusted using two screws, plus the option to choose one specifically made for women. I should also mention that along with my overbite, my teeth are not exactly straight which influenced my choice in deciding what to purchase.

The cost of this MAD wasn't cheap - $59.95 US plus shipping - but if it worked, I was willing to shell out the money, so I ordered one directly from their website. Within 2 weeks my mouthguard arrived.
Instructions were to simply heat the mouthguard in hot water for 10 seconds, let cool for a few seconds, place in mouth and press with fingers to mold to your teeth and mouth, then plunge it into cold water. Seemed simple enough - and it was.
That night, I was excited to use my VitalSleep but woke the next morning with an extremely sore jaw and my teeth were a bit achy (VitalSleep does say that there may be some soreness until you get used to the device). I asked my husband if it helped, he was happy to report that it did indeed stop my snoring. YAY!!
Cleaning of the mouthguard was easy - just using a toothbrush and some toothpaste to scrub, although with all the parts and crevices, I took the time to give it a good soak in denture cleaner once a week.
I wore the VitalSleep religiously over the past month, and as I did, because of the way it is constructed with my overbite and teeth that are not exactly straight, I noticed soreness on my gums and teeth in certain spots. I ended up reheating it about 3 weeks in which did help with the tender spots although did not get rid of them completely. In fact, this past week, I ended up having to cut off some of the plastic where it was rubbing on my gums.
Would I recommend the VitalSleep Anti-Snoring Mouthguard?
Sadly while it does work to eliminate snoring, I don't think I can recommend this device, especially if your teeth are not perfectly straight. Although it utilizes boil-and-bite technology, the mold fits around the gum line rather than the teeth. And with the plastic used to make this device being so rigid, it's not exactly very comfortable. The comfort level and fit could probably be turned up a notch if it molded around the teeth instead.
As well, the design has crevices that can harbor bacteria. So, scrubbing thoroughly is essential.
My rating: 2.75 out of 5
I have actually purchased a PureSleep device which utilizes a soft thermoplastic lining to take an exact impression of your teeth, and will be trying that out for the next month.
